Twenty-two undergraduate women
founded Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. on January 13, 1913 at
Howard University. These young women wanted to use their
collective strength to promote academic excellence and to
provide assistance to persons in need.
This is the story of
co-founder, L. Vashti Turley Murphy, Be Strong! The Life and
Times of Vashti Turley Murphy,. Oldest daughter,
Dr. Elizabeth Murphy Moss was the former publisher of the
Afro-American Newspapers. The book relates in Founder Murphy’s
own words, how she and 21 other young women founded the national
service sorority at Howard University in 1913.
